Would people be arguing for it as much if it were a male ritualist? Christmas presents around the Charr sack doll are just as Wintersday themed as the rit costume in the snow and next to a Christmas tree.

I'm thinking it may not have placed just because of the amount of cosplay they see at all the conventions they go to. They may just be getting tired of it.

Personally, I liked this one the best though I don't know what the white tiger has to do with Wintersday.

I actually take back my comments on the winner's entry not being wintersday themed after actually viewing the fullsize picture and seeing the presents in it XD oops

I was always under the impression that the main focus of the Wintersady Art Contest was the use of a creative rendition of the guild wars Wintersday theme. The first place winner, sure the charr doll is cute and well made but what does it have to do with Wintersday?? He just makes the doll and puts some wrapped presents next to it and its a Wintersday contest winner? I dont get it. He could have just have easily put a pumpkin next to it and entered it into the Halloween Contest.

Same with the second place winner. All the bracelets and pillows and stuff are very cool and well made but how does it embody artist creativity in relation to Wintersday? You just call them gifts and suddenly its a creative Wintersday design?

And the costume is awesome and well made and well shot but what does it have to do with Wintersday?? Just cause you have a snowy background?

They claim they look for "the melding of Wintersday into a Guild Wars theme" but it seems more like they just choose cool or cute entries they like with no actual rubric or method of judging.

novawhiz, what is your definition of Wintersday theme then? Only Grenth, Dwayna, and snowballs? They said "Create an original piece of art with a Wintersday holiday theme and a Guild Wars flavor." The present ideas fit that. We got presents and gifts all over Tyria: from quests, from Dwayna and Grenth, even Scrappy Jhim was passing out goodies. Mr. Irongrin wishing a Charrming Wintersday is themed and is GW. Gift giving is a huge part of Wintersday so presents are a Wintersday holiday theme and GW items are GW flavored. A ritualist out enjoying the snow for maybe the first time would be a Wintersday theme and is GW flavored too.

People have done a lot more creative things than just snowballs and grenth and dwayna. Making a Mad king thorn doll for the halloween contest made sense. It was using artistic creativity in the gw/halloween theme. Making a generic charr doll and just adding some photoshop text saying happy wintersday doesnt feel to me like a creative or clever or artistic rendition of gw + winter times. Neither does just gathering a bunch of premade guild wars trinkets together and calling them presents. And for the costume, it would have made sense to me to make a wintersday themed costume not just make a costume and wear it in snow and call it winter themed.

Im not the judge of the contest and I still applaud all the winners, but if i was judging the contest i would look more for creative artwork in relation to wintersday and not just cute or eccentric creations that stretch to fit the contest and look good at first glance.

Those were all hand-made.

i didnt mean like that. Didn't he make them before the contest as guild wars trinkets not specifically for the contest?

She, being me, and some were already made before the contest, some were made specifically for the contest.

I do understand your viewpoint but I will strongly argue against knocking my entry though. I went for gifts that I could see actually being given in the GW realm without the belief that everything has to be Grenth/Dwayna/Snowman/Grentches or only the gifts the game gives us out of the Presents.

Back on topic I also think that although the winners entry is very cool and had to of taken a long time in making it some of the other entries were much more amazing and should have won instead(including Minami's, which IMO was very cool(xD)).
The actual subject of the image was the cosplay. It wasn't the background or setting. The background was tacked onto the photo of the costume to fit the theme, but the primary subject of the image was not Wintersday, it was a ritualist cosplay outfit (which was well made but had nothing to do with Wintersday).

That would be like me going out, finding someone who did an awesome cosplay of a Guild Wars character (without any Wintersday theme in the actual costume) and then adding snow to it in an effort to win.

Adding snow to an already existing Guild Wars themed creation does not mean it's Wintersday themed.

my thoughts times 10

Same with the first place winner. Its a nice doll but its not wintersday related except for the text that says happy wintersday.

I was the 9th winner with Celestial Jingle Bears

http://www.guildwars.com/events/cont...ults.php?pos=9

I was honestly shocked that I placed this year, and hope other people enjoyed my display.

Congrats to the other winners this year, amazing work.

I'm sorry, but the jingle bear light display has been bugging since the winners were announced. I see those same exact lawn ornaments on what seems like every other lawn here during the holiday season. Nobody makes them! The bears, gift boxes and candy canes can be purchased from stores. Putting a piece of fabric and a few bells around the bears is worthy of a spot in the top 10 for an art contest?!

So does anyone from Anet care to explain how purcahsed lawn ornaments can place in an art contest and something like this doesn't even qualify for an honorable mention? Minami and several others also made excellent pieces! There isn't even any dispute about if they created it or not since their progress was documented.

Regardless of what you say, I enjoyed bringing it together and combining something from the dragon festival and Wintersday, it was fun. I just came on to share and congratulate the other winners, I'm not here to debate who should have won....honestly I could care less what you think of my display, all I care about is the GW team enjoyed it. Thanks hon
